"The Space" in Staunton will honor The Statler Brothers - Exhibit opens July 1st

JUNE 27, 2022 (Staunton, VA) - The Staunton Downtown Development Association (SDDA) with support from the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) announces the opening of THE SPACE, located at 35A South New Street in downtown Staunton (map at the bottom of this page).

THE SPACE will serve as an evolving location for smaller exhibits, conversations and happenings.

“This will hopefully be one more place that folks can stop for a moment or two and enjoy the little things in downtown!” added Greg A. Beam, SDDA Executive Director.

THE SPACE is located beside the Staunton Visitors Center on New Street and features storefront windows from both the street and the New Street parking garage. SDDA invites individuals to step up and take a peek through the glass to check what’s happening this summer.

“It’s a small room … but we have some big plans of how we can make best use of it to recognize, highlight and honor some of the wonderful people, businesses, services, products and organizations in Downtown Staunton,” said Michele Waitier, SDDA Assistant Director. “We don’t have all of the details ironed out as of yet—but that’s okay. We have an outstanding team of volunteers who share their time and talents with us to connect, collaborate and create---so THE SPACE will continue to evolve over time.”

Swinging the spotlight to the debut of THE SPACE this summer, the SDDA will open A Lil’ Statler Brothers Exhibit on Friday, July 1, 2022. This exhibit honors the Country Music Hall of Fame members and their roots in the Queen City. On special loan from the Statler Brothers and their families, A Lil’ Statler Brothers Exhibit features a variety of items and memorabilia from the group's career that spanned four decades — including some of their legendary costumes, stage equipment, books, a few never before seen photos and props from The Statler Brothers' show on The Nashville Network.

“Realizing that we would be opening THE SPACE so close to the 4th of July---we immediately thought that it would be perfect timing and way to launch THE SPACE by featuring a display of Statler Brothers memorabilia in downtown,” said Beam. “For many Staunton natives, it’s difficult to not mention the Statler Brothers when discussing the 4th of July---as they headlined the popular "Happy Birthday USA" concert and festival for 25 years at Gypsy Hill Park. We’re so thankful to the Statler Brothers and their families for continuing to share these items and memories with our community.”

The SDDA will also debut their “little truck” in Staunton’s 4th of July parade this year---promoting THE SPACE---with A Lil’ Statler Brothers theme.

SDDA’s A Lil’ Statler Brothers Exhibit at THE SPACE offers visitors and residents an opportunity to step up, look through the glass (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) from either the New Street windows or inside the New Street parking garage. There is no access into THE SPACE for this particular exhibit, only the ability to lean in and look through the glass. Curtains open on A Lil’ Statler Brothers Exhibit officially Friday, July 1 and runs through Labor Day.
